Project Blue Book was the name of the Air Force’s official investigation of UFO phenomena. The term was coined by Captain Edward J. Ruppelt.

On this date in 1947, a press statement was issued saying the army had recovered a crashed “flying disk” from a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. The UFO story emerged thirty years later when a major involved in the original recovery expressed his belief the military had recovered an alien spacecraft.
