If you want to create sacred space in a more defined way for spiritual work, you can use this simple method. It’s true that the home is in itself sacred space, but there are times when you may need to define an area that is set apart as particularly sacred for whatever reason. Think of this method as purifying a specific space so that it is immediately available for specific spiritual work.

Create Sacred Space

Here’s a simple way to create sacred space. If moving around the space you wish to define is difficult, you can turn in place and raise the element to the four cardinal directions, visualizing the energy of the element flowing out from the symbol in your hands and pushing away any unwanted energy.

You will need:

✵ Candle in a candleholder

✵ Incense and a censer

✵ Matches or lighter

✵ Small cup of water

✵ Small dish of salt, sand, or earth

1. Light the candle and the incense. Take a minute to be fully mindful of the moment.

2. Carry the incense around the space in which you wish to work, saying:

I bless this space with air.

3. Carry the candle around the space, saying:

I bless this space with fire.

4. Carry the cup of water around the space, saying:

I bless this space with water.

5. Carry the salt around the space, saying:

I bless this space with earth.

6. Return to your starting place and close your eyes. Reach out with your heart and connect to your spiritual hearth. Say:

I call upon the power of the spiritual hearth to bless this space.

Sacred space doesn’t have to be dismissed or undone in any way when you are finished. The energy of the surrounding environment will gradually flow through it and return it to its everyday status.
