LEGENDARY POWER

Many legends exist about Topaz, although originally the name also encompassed Peridot and Malachite. Topaz’s power comes from its connection to the sun. Its name derives from the Sanskrit word for fire, which suggests its vibrant properties. Some say it was named after Topazios, an island in the Red Sea that was always shrouded in fog. Under the principle of cosmic sympathy and antipathy, this may be connected to Topaz’s reputation for clarity—the crystal drives away mental confusion and assists in finding your own inner riches.

Traditionally, Topaz harnessed the power of the sun. Its color was also said to wax and wane with the moon. Pyroelectric, when rubbed vigorously it generates an electrical charge, which may be why it is so efficient at recharging the aura, energizing the physical body, and motivating the psyche.

Topaz symbolizes love, a gentle nature, friendship, and fidelity, and is said to bestow courage and wisdom. A gift of a Topaz amulet kept a beloved safe. According to Agrippa, it had enmity against “spiritual heats,” such as lust and other “excesses of love,” and guarded against covetousness. It also bestowed power over wild animals.

Topaz is a stone for Archangels Michael and Raziel, keeper of the mysteries. It has dominion over the Archangel realm in one ancient lapidary, over the Cherubim in another. According to the Archbishop of Mainz, it had the power to instill “ardent contemplation of the prophecies.”

HEALING POWER

In the tenth century, Topaz was known for its power in healing eye diseases, a quality reiterated by Hildegard of Bingen, who recommended bathing the eyes with Topazinfused water to overcome dimness of vision. In 1584, Jerome Cardan assured that he had tested the powers of Topaz and it cured insanity—apothecaries sold powdered Topaz as an antidote to madness. Today, it is said to stimulate digestion, assist assimilation of nutrients, and reveal the past-life pattern behind anorexia. Golden Topaz is a useful battery for recharging the body and overcoming nervous exhaustion.
