More than six thousand years ago, Malachite came from Egyptian copper mines in the Sinai that were sacred to the goddess Hathor (Venus). The huge Malachite columns in Istanbul’s church of Hagia Sophia were recycled from an earlier temple of Diana at Ephesus.

Malachite was originally used as an amulet against enchantment and the evil eye. The ancients engraved the sun on the stone because they believed sunlight was antithetical to black magic, necromancers, and demons. Pliny tells us Malachite, a natural prophylactic against danger, benefited nursing mothers and protected children. Throughout the ancient and medieval worlds, the stone was used for healing the eyes. According to an ancient rhyme, “Opaque in hue, with th’ emerald’s vivid green [Malachite] charms the sight.”

HEALING POWER

Malachite is a powerful conduit for transferring energy into the body and for absorbing environmental pollution, such as geopathic stress, electromagnetic smog, and radiation. Its reputation includes healing arthritis, possibly due to the minute particles of copper it contains, which are absorbed into the wearer’s bloodstream. The Egyptians used Malachite as a paste to treat the eyes, cholera, and infected wounds. The copper carbonate hydroxide in Malachite has recently been found to have an antibacterial effect, inhibiting pathogens such as staphylococcus. This effect would have been reinforced by the Egyptian custom of mixing powdered Malachite with honey, a natural antibiotic.

Medieval lapidaries recommended Malachite for curing cramps and seizures and for easing childbirth. Crystal workers today use it to draw dis-ease from body and soul, and to assist psychosexual difficulties. On the physical level, it cleanses and regulates the body’s organs. At the psychosomatic level, it dissolves the deeper causes of dis-ease. Malachite is best used under the guidance of an experienced crystal worker.
