Nietzsche suffered a psychotic breakdown at age 44. Sending letters to friends, he signed them “Dionysus the Crucified.” Placed into asylums and then into his mother’s care, he lived in a semiconscious state until his death at age 56.

Friedrich Nietzsche, one of the world’s most profound and influential modern philosophers, was awarded his doctorate from the University of Leipzig on this day in 1869.
