Industrialist Cornelius Vanderbilt, one of the wealthiest men of American history, died on this day in 1877. Leaving most of his fortune to his son Henry, who doubled it, this patriarch is ancestor to Gloria Vanderbilt and Anderson Cooper. The Vanderbilts created luxurious residences, many of which are open today for public touring, and left a legacy of philanthropy including Vanderbilt University and the Medical School at Columbia University.
