The meteor shower is named after Perseus, the Greek hero best known for decapitating the fearsome, snake-haired Medusa. Some Catholics refer to the Perseids as the “tears of St. Lawrence” due to the fact that August 10 is the date of this saint’s martyrdom.
Today marks the approximate peak of the Perseid meteor shower. Observable for over 2,000 years, it is visible through the Northern Hemisphere. It produces up to sixty meteors an hour when viewed at its optimal point in the wee hours of the morning.
