Papus’s Tarot Discovery Spread

On This Day

Papus was only 24 years old when he wrote his complicated treatise Tarot of the Gypsies: The Most Ancient Book in the World, otherwise known as Tarot of the Bohemians.

Gérard Encausse, or Papus, was born on this day in 1865. He didn’t alter the course of tarot’s history, but he did keep the momentum going by forging a deep connection between tarot and Kabbalah, the two largest Western magical traditions.

Summation of Spread

The Eight of Cups connects to all journeys, tarot or otherwise. The figure moving up the mountain is the Hermit, who sets off on his journey to enlightenment. Leaving all worldly possessions behind him as he goes, this is a metaphor for abandoning what you have gained in search for something more.

Papus’s Tarot Discovery Spread was created to examine a personal journey with the cards. A tarot practice takes many forms; this spread inquires about your path.
