Exorcism Spread

On This Day

The US yearly average of requests for exorcism comes in at about 400, but only two or three are usually approved by the church. Pope John Paul the Second carried out an unsuccessful exorcism in 2000. It took many more sessions from another priest to “cleanse” the victim.

The ancient Roman Lemuralia—a feast to exorcise unwanted spirits from the home—was held today. It was standard for the head of the family to rise at midnight, walk barefoot around the home, and throw black beans while reciting incantations. Other family members banged pots and pans to rid the home from the wandering, restless spirits.

Summation of Spread

The Devil card represents the demon long blamed for the horrific actions of humanity. People find it easier to blame an external influence for wrongdoing rather than look within themselves.

Let’s hope you won’t ever have to exorcise an actual demon from your life. Every now and then, though, there are habits, people, or situations we’d be better off without. The Exorcism Spread takes a look at issues hindering us so they may be removed.
