Cornflowers are charming, bright-blue members of the daisy family. They grow in fields and even in the cracks of sidewalks in the middle of cities. Cornflower’s bright blue can make a lovely ink, though it does fade fast. Cornflower petals are edible and often found in commercially available teas.

MEDICINAL PROPERTIES

My first experience with cornflower was when my mother made her into a tea that she used to clear out my eye, which was swollen and red after playing in the dirt. Cornflower can help reduce a fever and relieve menstrual cramps, as well as reduce water retention and inflammation. She is also taken as a tonic or a bitter for liver and gallbladder health, and is commonly known for treating vaginal yeast infections.

MAGICAL PROPERTIES

The cornflower has a tradition somewhat like the “he loves me, he loves me not” game—young men would wear cornflowers in their buttonholes (hence the nickname “bachelor’s button”) and if the flower lost its color too quickly, then their love was unrequited—but if the cornflower remained bright blue, it was returned. Keeping fresh or dried cornflowers strewn about your altar will enhance your psychic abilities, and if you ask her to, cornflower will also invite love into your life. You can also drink cornflower tea for the same purposes, or to enhance fertility.

PLANT WISDOM

If you look closely at the cornflower, you almost feel like she is trying to hypnotize you. That’s because she latches on to your third eye and stimulates it, awakening a knowing and wisdom within you. You can work with her by drinking her tea, or by sitting with her and gazing into her flower, using her as a divination tool.
