Copal is a resinous substance drawn from the Protium copal tree. Its consistency is somewhere between sap and a true hardened resin, as it’s somewhat soft and sticky. Copal is sacred to the Indigenous peoples of Mexico and South and Central American countries, and has been for thousands of years. Mass amounts of copal were burned atop Aztec and Mayan pyramids as offerings to various gods and deities.

MEDICINAL PROPERTIES

Copal is known to be an antiseptic, and she also has potent tissue-repairing, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, and antifungal properties. The oil can be applied to dry scalps, skin irritations, minor cuts, burns, boils, rashes, and acne. She can also treat insect bites, especially if you have an allergic reaction to the bite or sting.

MAGICAL PROPERTIES

Indigenous peoples still work with copal today, particularly in sacred sweat lodge or psychedelic substance ceremonies, and you can work with copal in a manner that is respectful of these cultures.
