FOOD AND FOOD-RELATED ACTIVITIES play a significant role in our lives, and yet other than foods associated with holidays, we rarely think of food as having a spiritual connection. Food is a very physical thing, and as such we often forget that it has a place within our spiritual lives as well. This chapter is divided into two parts. The first part looks at the relationship between food and spirituality. The second half focuses on simple hearth-based or hearth-associated dishes and recipes.

Think about Food

Recognizing the spiritual aspect of food is an informal act that you can perform to touch your spirituality on a daily basis. Here’s an exercise that can reveal some interesting facts about your eating habits: for one week, keep a journal of what food you prepare and what you consume. Note down the following:

✵ The ingredients

✵ Total time spent assembling and cooking

✵ Time spent eating

✵ Where you ate it

✵ How much was eaten, and how much was left over

✵ If the leftovers were eaten the next day or in days following

✵ What spiritual practices you engaged in while you did any/all of the above (what prayers did you say, did you specifically add an ingredient or herb with a magical intent, did you leave an offering to a god or spirit, and if you did so, when?)

This collection of information can teach you a great deal about how much weight you give to various steps of the food preparation and consumption process.
