Kamui-fuchi
Hearth and Home Deities

Kamui-fuchi is a Japanese goddess of the hearth, originally from the Ainu people. Her name means “Rising Fire Sparks Woman,” and she is symbolized by the flame in the hearth. Legend has it that she never leaves a particular home, and therefore the fire is never allowed to die. She is the major overseer of the household, but as she does not leave her place there are other household spirits that report to her. She guards the home and also dispenses justice in domestic affairs.

In Ainu tradition, the hearth is also the dwelling place of the ancestors, locating them in the heart of the household. The hearth fire was also seen as a doorway through which the family could communicate with the spirit world.
