LEGENDARY POWER

In the seventeenth century, Shakespeare referred to Emerald’s power to soothe the eyes: “The deep-green emerald, in whose fresh regard weak sights their sickly radiance do amend.” In 1584, Ivan the Terrible believed that Emerald, being of the nature of the rainbow, was an enemy of uncleanness.

Magical legends have long been associated with this rare and precious gemstone. According to Hebrew tradition, serpents that looked on it went blind. Pliny comments on Emerald’s use as a magnifying lens and tells us that nothing in nature compared to the stone’s intense green: “Neither dim nor shade nor yet the light of a candle, causes them to lose their luster.” The seventh-century bishop of Seville, Isidore, reported that Emerald lit up the surrounding area with green light. The Incas prized the crystal highly as representing the green Earth. When taken prisoner by Pizarro in 1532, the last Inca king wore a crown set with 453 Emeralds weighing 1,523 karats (ten ounces). In the Middle Ages, the crystal was placed beneath the tongue to induce prophetic vision. It is linked with Archangel Ophaniel and rules the realm of the Cherubim.

HEALING POWER

The ancient Greek philosopher Theophrastus tells us Emerald was good for eyes, imparting visual clarity. Crystal workers still use Emerald to soothe inflamed eyes and to stimulate sight and insight. The early Persians used it to restore their craftsmen’s overtaxed eyesight and to heal stomach and liver ailments. Traditionally, it prevented epilepsy and calmed the spirit, and was said to sweat in the presence of poison. Wearing this stone ensured speedy recovery after illness. It may help to detoxify and stimulate the liver, aiding excretion of poisons from the body via the lymphatic system.

TRANSFORMATIONAL POWER

Emerald symbolizes immortality and rebirth. Whether raw or faceted, this stone provides enormous inspiration on the spiritual path and gives you patience to pass through challenges with equanimity. Promoting friendship and unconditional love, Emerald enhances relationships on all levels, keeping partnerships in harmony. The stone balances the emotional, mental, and spiritual levels, transmuting negativity into positive action. It has long been used to stimulate metaphysical abilities, opening a broader vision that sees beyond the projections of the material world. The power of Emerald was traditionally harnessed to see into the future and to ensure a fortuitous rebirth. (Note: Worn constantly, Emerald can overstimulate.)
