LEGENDARY POWER
Bloodstone has long been famed for its magical power in controlling the weather and banishing evil. Throughout the ancient and medieval world, Bloodstone was worn as an amulet. One of the earliest known healing stones, Bloodstone occurs in a five-thousand-year-old Mesopotamian “recipe” for purifying the blood—which negates later legends that the stone was formed at the crucifixion when Christ’s blood fell onto Jasper at the foot of the cross. Bloodstone was said to have the power of healing wounds. Its coagulant effect probably comes from the iron oxide in the stone.
Pliny noted the stone was believed to confer invisibility on the wearer, a possibility he repudiated, however.
In the language of gemstones, Bloodstone signifies courage and wisdom. According to the magician Agrippa, it ensured fame and long life. The Victorians wore it to signal “I mourn your absence.” Heliotrope and Bloodstone are often conflated, especially in early lapidaries, but Heliotrope is translucent whereas Bloodstone is opaque.
HEALING POWER
In the Middle Ages, Bloodstone was credited with the power to stop nosebleeds, but its connection with blood and the kidneys dates back to Mesopotamia. In the ancient Near East and in Europe in the Middle Ages, it was powdered and mixed with honey and egg white to draw out snake venom, reduce tumors, and staunch hemorrhages.
According to the Alfonso lapidary, Bloodstone hung over an abscess cleared putre-faction in a day—and just looking at a Bloodstone apparently prevented eye diseases. The powder traditionally dried watery secretions because of the stone’s great heat and dryness. Today crystal workers use Bloodstone to strengthen the blood and kidneys, and to cleanse subtle energy. It is still said to reduce the formation of pus and to prevent overacidification.
TRANSFORMATIONAL POWER
Bloodstone protects the soul on many levels, keeping out undesirable entities and dispelling mental confusion. Regarded as a shape-shifting stone because its colors change in different lights, it teaches you how to travel invisibly between the worlds and negotiate different realms. In everyday life, Bloodstone shows when it is appropriate to strategically withdraw from situations, but instills the courage to confront threats when necessary. Carry it if you need to adjust to new circumstances. This stone heals the ancestral line (see Glossary on page 216) by dispelling negative patterns, helping you live in the present untrammeled by the past. With Bloodstone raising your vibrations, you become a purified being.
