Protection
The Witch’s Garden of Herbal Magick

It’s important to know how to protect yourself and your space. Many people go through life without clearing or protecting their energy, and they feel ill, stressed, depressed, tired, and, in many cases, lost. Life can become clouded and more difficult to navigate when you’re carrying around energy that doesn’t belong to you or negatively impacts your mind, body, and spirit. So get into the habit of adding protection into your life on a daily basis, and I assure you that things will start to shift in the most wonderful of ways!

Here are a few Magickal workings that are sure to bring protection into your life. You can use them for yourself or for loved ones, and for protection from negativity, intruders, ill will, misalignment, and more.

Image Bay leaf banishing-night-spirits spell

This is the spell my mother used when I suffered nightmares as a child.

What you need

1 bay leaf

1 glass cold water

½ teaspoon salt

What to do

✵ Take the bay leaf and whisper into it ’May the spirits rest in peace so that I can also.’

✵ Put the bay leaf in the glass, add the salt then place the glass under the part of the bed you sleep in. The water is meant to expel any negative energy and the bay and salt provide protection against its return.

✵ In the morning pour away the water, then start over every night if necessary. I do this for my children and they sleep all the way through without any nightmares.

Rue protection sachet

Rue has great protective qualities and I use it in most of my Magickal workings for protection. This sachet spell is simple and easy. Keep the sachet close to you at all times to dispel negativity and ill intent. You can also use it for protection while dreaming — simply place it under your pillow while you sleep.

What you need

A small bag or pouch

1 tablespoon dried rue

1 tablespoon salt

1 tablespoon dried witch hazel

3 drops cedarwood essential oil or myrrh essential oil

What to do

✵ Put all the ingredients, including the oil, into the bag.

✵ You can refresh your sachet with an extra drop of the essential oil it includes.

Uncrossing is a term Witches often use for breaking, cutting, or undoing, and nettle is used to break a curse or jinx.

What you need

A small bowl

1 tablespoon dried nettle

1 tablespoon dried agrimony

1 tablespoon sea salt

1 tablespoon charcoal crushed almost to a powder

4fl oz (120ml) safflower oil

What to do

✵ In the bowl mix together the herbs, salt, and charcoal. Add the safflower oil until the mixture has the consistency of a facial scrub.

✵ Softly rub it onto your belly as you speak your intention. (Do a skin patch test first to check for any reaction.)

✵ Leave it there overnight but wash it off before the Sun rises. Repeat the process for two more days.

Image Cumin thief-repellent spell

Since ancient times cumin has been known both for its healing properties and its ability to protect — including protection from any intruders with ill intentions.

What you need

Ground cumin, dried basil, and salt in equal amounts (use tablespoons or cups)

What to do

✵ Combine all the ingredients and either sprinkle the mixture around your home or in front of your house. I like to keep a sachet of this blend in the drawer where I keep my most sacred items.
