Mabon
Sun Celebrations (Sabbats)
Rituals to Enhance your Spiritual Journey

On Mabon, or the Autumn Equinox, the Earth experiences equal nighttime and daytime (like the Spring Equinox). It’s the second of the three harvest festivals. During this time, you’ll often notice a wave of fruit and vegetables being harvested and showing up in supermarkets (or even in your own garden). Mabon is an ideal time to reflect and focus on goals.

MABON ACCUMULATION RITUAL

During Mabon, the second harvest, we honor what we’ve reaped from the earth. It is a time to celebrate nature and all it provides. This ritual is an opportunity to write down our thanks for what the earth gives us, creating a time capsule for the Wheel of the Year.

Ritual Setting

Altar

Tools and Supplies

For the ritual

Festive decorations for Mabon—root vegetables, apples, grapes, harvest decorations

Wand or athame

Elemental representations

Deity representation

For the capsule

Pen and paper

Mason jar or empty coffee can with lid

1 (4- or 5-piece) bouquet of greenery and flowers

1 clear quartz or yellow crystal—yellow agate, citrine, yellow topaz, or tiger’s eye

1 ounce dried sage

PRIOR TO THE RITUAL

1.Shower or bathe, visualizing all old or unwanted energies leaving your being.

2.Cleanse the altar.

PREPARING THE ALTAR

Place the decorations, tools, and supplies on the altar. Place the elemental representations in a pentacle configuration. Place the deity representation at the top of the altar.

THE RITUAL

1.Cast a circle of protection. Hold the wand or athame as an extension of your hand to gather and direct energy as you call upon the elements. Starting from the east and ending north, call upon the element of air for mental clarity, the element of fire for power, the element of water for fluidity, and the element of earth for stability.

2.Invoke the God and Goddess by saying something like: “God and Goddess of the Mabon Harvest, I invite you to join my sacred circle.”

3.Using the pen and paper, write a letter about all that you’re thankful for. Think about everything you’ve accumulated thus far in your life and all the earth has given you.

4.Place the letter in the jar along with the bouquet.

5.Place the crystal in the jar and sprinkle the sage on top, saying: “I am thankful for all that I have and blessed for all my experiences. It’s time to look within and celebrate all that I’ve accumulated.”

6.Cover the jar with its lid and thank the God and Goddess: “God and Goddess of the Mabon Harvest, I humbly thank you for your presence here. Go if you desire or stay if you’d like.”

7.Release the elements in reverse order by beginning facing the north and ending east, thanking each element for their assistance and bidding them farewell. Then open the circle by saying: “I open this circle and release the energy back into the earth.”

8.Bury the capsule outside. If you’d like, you can retrieve it and repeat the ritual the following year.

MABON RELEASE RITUAL

Mabon is a time to take stock of all that you have, both physically and spiritually, and to release what no longer serves you. This ritual will help you think about what it’s time to let go of, as well as what might be holding you back. You’ll use divination to help you get to the root of what you need to release.

PRIOR TO THE RITUAL

1.Shower or bathe, visualizing all old or unwanted energies leaving your being.

2.Cleanse the altar.

PREPARING THE ALTAR

Place the festive decorations and tools on the altar. Place the elemental representations in a pentacle configuration. Place the deity representation at the top of the altar. Place the crystal and divination deck in the middle of the pentacle.

THE RITUAL

1.Cast a circle of protection. Hold the wand or athame as an extension of your hand to gather and direct energy as you call upon the elements. Starting from the east and ending north, call upon the element of air for mental clarity, the element of fire for power, the element of water for fluidity, and the element of earth for stability.

2.Invoke deities by saying something like: “Deities of Mabon, I welcome you to my sacred circle.”

3.Close your eyes and meditate for 5 to 10 minutes on your year thus far until you have a sense of what needs to be released.

4.Begin to shuffle your divination deck until you feel compelled to stop.

5.Fan out the cards on the altar. Pull three cards and ask three questions: Which area in my life is out of balance? What no longer serves me currently? How might I bring balance back to my life?

6.Spend 5 to 10 minutes reflecting on the three cards, using them to help you interpret what you need to release. Use the journal to take notes.

7.Thank the deities and leave your offering: “Deities of Mabon, I humbly thank you for your presence here. Go if you desire or stay if you’d like.”

8.Release the elements in reverse order by beginning facing the north and ending east, thanking each element for their assistance and bidding them farewell. Then open the circle by saying: “I open this circle and release the energy back into the earth.”

9.Leave the offering on the altar.
