Historically one of the most revered trees of Africa and the Middle East, the sycamore fig (Ficus sycomorus) has been cultivated since ancient times. An exceptionally tall member of the fig family, he is quite majestic and lush, and is well loved for the much-needed shade he generously casts over parched desert landscapes.

Magical Uses

Divine Alignment

The sycamore fig was considered the Tree of Life in ancient Egypt: the symbolic uniting of earth with heaven, and humans with the Divine. Various individual trees were aligned with emanations of the Great Goddess, such as Isis, Hathor, Nut, and Neith. It was customary for these trees to be presented with fruit and water offerings, particularly as petitions for prayers. Additionally, as a symbol of life after death, sycamore fig leaves, fruit, and wood were included in Egyptian tombs throughout the centuries.

For the Kikuyu people of Kenya, the tree is aligned with their creator god, Ngai. Offerings to this deity were made beneath the tree, and Kikuyu even translates to something like “children of the giant sycamore fig.”

To effectively align your mind, body, and affairs with the organizing and activating power of the Divine and heavenly realm, visit a sycamore fig and sit with your back against the trunk. Feel, imagine, and sense wise and healing cosmic energy coming down from the tree’s branches and through the crown of your head and spine, as you simultaneously feel the earth’s grounding energy coming up from the tree’s roots and rushing up through your tailbone. Feel these two energies becoming one within you as they each clear, calibrate, and fuel you in all the most ideal possible ways.

Magical Authority

Experienced practitioners know that when it comes to successful spells and visualizations, magical authority is the one ingredient you can’t do without. If you don’t believe in your own authority to create positive change, the universe won’t either (because when it comes down to it, there is no separation: you and the universe are one). If your magical mojo seems to be temporarily missing or misplaced, sycamore fig can help. For this purpose, make an offering of water and grapes to a sycamore fig, either in the physical world or in your mind’s eye. Then spend some relaxing and rejuvenating time in quiet contemplation, soaking in the tree’s ancient wisdom and power.
