Walnut (Juglans) is steadfast, cheerful, and decidedly affluent. With lush green leaves, gorgeous wood, and preciously nutrient-dense nuts, he’s a tree with a decided knack for generosity.

Magical Uses

Expansion

The walnut’s genus name, Juglans, is derived from the Latin for “tree of Jupiter.” As a god (and a planet) associated with expansion, Jupiter and his tree can help us with magical intentions related to any form of expansion, including (but not limited to) expansion of our career, finances, perspective, positivity, or life vision.

Health and Healing

Walnut, and his close relative butternut, has been used traditionally for centuries in both the west and the east to treat a number of health challenges including aches, wounds, liver and kidney challenges, and skin conditions. Magically, simply spending time with a flourishing walnut tree can lend great strength to the immune system and energetic field.

Mother Goddess Alignment

In India walnuts are offered at the shrine of the goddess Vaishno Devi (also known as Mata Rani), an emanation of the Great Mother Goddess who supports us in all ways and bestows all forms of blessings: material, emotional, and spiritual. To align with the Mother Goddess and allow her blessings to flow into your life, create an altar to her and place a bowl of unshelled walnuts on it as an offering. This can also be a good way to heal mother issues and to feel naturally nourished and nurtured by the archetypal Divine Mother (known as Gaia, Mary, Demeter, Durga, Ceres, Isis, Mother Earth, and many other names).

Wealth

As a yearly producer of tasty nutrition and sustenance, the walnut tree is an expert in perennial wealth. According to author Sandra Kynes in Whispers from the Woods, “As an offering to the Roman goddess of fruit trees [Pomona], the Romans would bury a coin beneath a walnut tree,” thus magically aligning prosperity directly to the abundant fruitfulness of the tree. Of course, as a tree aligned with Jupiter, the walnut is a natural choice for magic related to expanding wealth and prosperity.
