Marquis de Sade’s S & M Spread

On This Day

The words sadist and sadism are derived from the Marquis de Sade’s name.

The Marquis de Sade died in his sleep on this night in 1814. French aristocrat, philosopher, and writer famous for his libertine sexuality, he rejected any moral code. Best known for his erotic works, the Marquis spent over thirty-two years of his life in insane asylums, where he would ultimately die at age seventy-four.

Summation of Spread

The Eight of Swords is commonly referred to as the bondage card. The female figure is bound and blindfolded—however, once the folds are removed, she will see the world with a new set of eyes.

Inspired by the naughty French aristocrat, this spread examines eroticism and new ideas in the bedroom, especially within the framework of domination and submission.
