The virtue of Fortitude usually depicts a lion or broken column. The Visconti-Sforza deck, however, shows Heracles attacking a lion, which is a likely allegory of Sforza, the man who commissioned the deck, and his military victories.

A solar eclipse on this day in 1251 BCE may mark the birth of legendary Heracles, divine hero of Greek mythology. Heracles displayed strength, courage, and ingenuity; Hercules is his Roman equivalent.
