Vincenzo Peruggia, a Louvre employee, hid the Mona Lisa in a broom closet and walked out with it under his coat. The painting was stored in a trunk for two years before Peruggia was caught trying to sell the Mona Lisa to the directors of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

On this date in 1911 the Mona Lisa was reported missing from the Louvre. The Louvre closed for a week while the investigation was underway. Even Pablo Picasso was brought in for questioning.
