During this Roman celebration, all horses and mules were exempted from labor. The animals were led through the streets and adorned with garlands of flowers.
Today is the ancient Roman festival Consualia, held in honor of Consus, deity of the harvest and stored grain. Harvest grains were held in underground vaults, as was Consus’s temple. Consus’s shrine, covered all year, was uncovered and worshiped on this day.
