Bastille Day Start a Revolution Spread

On This Day

Storming the Bastille was a symbolic act, as it only held seven prisoners the day it was taken. Four of the prisoners being held were there for check forging.

The Bastille, a French prison and symbol of a king’s tyranny, was stormed on this day in 1789. This was the flashpoint that ignited the French Revolution. During the following ten years, French society underwent an epic transformation. Absolute monarchy and feudal society were challenged as democracy spread through Europe and ultimately the world.
