Trojan Horse Spread

On This Day

Both The Iliad and

The Odyssey began as oral tradition and were transcribed centuries after their composition.

Troy was sacked and burned on this day in 1184 BCE. Virgil’s Aeneid describes how, after ten warring years, the Greeks devised a new strategy. Constructing a massive wooden horse and hiding men inside, they pretended to sail away, leaving the horse behind. The Trojans, thinking it a victory prize, brought the horse inside the gates. Under the darkness of night, the Greeks crept out of the horse, opened the gates, sacked Troy, and ended the war.

This is especially helpful for the person who finds themselves re-creating similar situations and wants to break the habit. Often the enemy behind the gate is ourselves.
