Troy was sacked and burned on this day in 1184 BCE. Virgil’s Aeneid describes how, after ten warring years, the Greeks devised a new strategy. Constructing a massive wooden horse and hiding men inside, they pretended to sail away, leaving the horse behind. The Trojans, thinking it a victory prize, brought the horse inside the gates. Under the darkness of night, the Greeks crept out of the horse, opened the gates, sacked Troy, and ended the war.
