Dracaena translates to “female dragon,” perhaps because her stems are red like blood. Dracaenas make wonderful houseplants. They don’t require much watering, but they like a humid environment, so placing pebbles around their base will help keep them happy.

MEDICINAL PROPERTIES

Dracaena produces a resin that was once used as toothpaste, for dyeing purposes, and as a cure for rheumatism and dysentery. Today, she’s mostly used as a wood varnish, particularly for violins. Like many houseplants, she is a wonderful air purifier, and grown either indoors or outdoors she will reduce lead levels in particular.

MAGICAL PROPERTIES

Certain varieties of dracaena can grow into a large tree with branches growing wildly in all directions—much like a many-headed dragon. Incorporating dracaena into any spell, whether through using her leaves, resin, or bark, or by simply working with her energy, will help boost the power of your spell.
