These splendid, fragrant trees with their showy, abundant blossoms herald the arrival of spring. They are ancient, having evolved before bees, and so are pollinated primarily by beetles. The flowers are thick and tough, yet soft.

MEDICINAL PROPERTIES

Most species of magnolia have edible flowers, which are either pickled or used to make tea. The young leaves and flower buds can be cooked and eaten as well. Magnolia has long been a part of Chinese medicine, where the bark is used to calm anxiety and promote restful sleep. There have also been studies suggesting that one of the compounds in magnolia may ward off cancer, particularly leukemia and colon cancer.

MAGICAL PROPERTIES

One way to work with magnolia is to tap into the sacred source of your feminine power: Mash magnolia petals with your menstrual blood and place the mixture next to you while you do any ritual Magic, including dancing or even prayer. If you can’t use menstrual blood, saliva will work just as well—both men and women can access this power. Magnolia will bring you confidence, abundance, healing, and connection to the Earth and your higher self.
