The Dumb Supper
Hounds and Hauntings

by Kelly Spangler

On October 28, 2004, I was attending what is called a Dumb Supper in Salem, Massachusetts. This is a dinner to honor the dead and the death of loved ones passed over.

As I sat in silence eating my dinner, I had tears in my eyes because I sensed many spirits around us. I suddenly felt the urge to reach down and pet something. I felt a pressure on my leg as if some animal was looking for a bit of comfort. I then got a glimpse of a dog staring straight up at me while resting its head on my leg. It was the spirit of my brother’s deceased dog, Cocoa, and this is what she used to do to everyone when she was alive. I was petting her as if she were really there.

After the dinner a friend who was sitting next to me asked, “Why did I have the strong feeling that I needed to throw down food to the floor next to me and you?” This confirmed to me that what I experienced had actually happened.

I started to cry and said, “Because Cocoa was there!”
