Sweet basil has a fresh, herbaceous aroma, while holy basil has a strong, spicy fragrance.

HISTORY/LORE

Holy basil, or tulsi, is native to India and is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Hindus regard the plant as a manifestation of the goddess Tulsi and traditionally keep a holy basil plant in or near their homes. In Crete, basil was placed on windowsills to keep the devil away.
