The Saturnalia was the old Roman festival corresponding to the Winter Solstice. Many of its traditions have been incorporated into modern Christmas practices including giving gifts to children. The star of the Saturnalia, the Roman god Saturn, was a white-bearded old gentleman who bears a resemblance to the modern Santa Claus.
