Crystals: How to Use Crystals and Their Energy to Enhance Your Life (Hay House Basics) - Judy Hall 2015

’A heap of blessings numerous as the sands’
Crystal Foundations

Crystals have been used for protection, divination and healing in every region of the world for at least 7,000 years. In the ancient world, rocks weren’t just chosen for their beauty as adornments or their strength as building materials; their innate abilities to carry electromagnetic and other Earth currents were also utilized. Rocks containing a high proportion of piezoelectric Quartz were the material of choice for stone circles, temples and tombs right across the ancient world. Quartz kerbstones may have protected the dead — and enabled the spirits of the ancestors to communicate with the living.

Theophrastus on Stones, the earliest known Greek scientific treatise, deals expressly with the properties of minerals and the products derived from them. Dating to the fourth century BCE, it was the source for the Roman geographer Pliny’s commentary on stones in his Natural History and, most probably, for the unknown author of the Lithica, a fourth-century lapidary, which tells us that crystals are ’a sure remede against each earthly woe’. The book recounts the numerous ways in which amulets, precious and semi-precious stones were used:

Enjoying [crystal] wealth, in its possession sure,

No care, no sorrow shall he ever taste.

Nor pining sickness his strong body waste…

Nor, dreading his foes’ might, from battle flee,

Abandoning the hope of victory…

In regal courts he honour shall command…

And the soft maid, by love’s strong impulse led,

Shall gently draw towards the golden bed.

His prayers shall ever reach the Immortals’ ear,

Angry seas nor tempests shall he fear…

Him, though alone, shall savage robbers flee…

He shall at will the hidden thoughts perceive,

Which others in their inmost hearts conceive.

And what the birds, the inmates of the sky,

Those winged interpreters of heaven’s decrees…

He learns the dragon’s rushing force to break,

And quench the venom of the crawling snake…

The man dashed to the ground in that dire hour

When reels his brain ’neath Luna’s baleful power,

I’ll teach his cure, and how the pest to tame…

And how to ban by spells the dead man’s ghost…

This extract describes healing, protection, divine intervention, attracting abundance and love, honing psychic abilities, banishing unquiet spirits and taming natural forces — all applications of crystal power today.

Amulets for protection from harm

Few people in the ancient world would have dreamed of undertaking a venture without an amulet — an object worn or carried to protect them from harm. Crystals were often used for this purpose. Small children were given protective strings of Bloodstone, Carnelian and Jasper to ensure their wellbeing from birth. Priests used the stones for healing and for protection against the evils of the everyday and supernatural worlds. A bishop’s Amethyst ring today carries the same power of protection and blessing.

Exercise: Making an amulet

✵ Choose an appropriate cleansed (see Exercise: Cleansing a crystal), tumbled or shaped crystal. If you wish to wear your amulet, choose one with a hole.

✵ Open your palm chakras (see Exercise: Opening the palm chakras).

✵ Hold the stone in your hands for a few moments and ask it to give you protection, good health, abundance or whatever your purpose is. Be clear and specific about what you wish the stone to do.

✵ If you work with a personal deity or angelic being, ask that it imbues the stone with its presence.

✵ If you work with symbols, draw the appropriate symbol on the stone with an indelible marker pen.

✵ Place the stone in a pouch and put it in your pocket or around your neck, or thread the amulet onto a cord and wear it constantly.

Traditional amulet stones include Agate, Amethyst, Bloodstone, Carnelian, Chrysoprase, Emerald, Flint, Jade, Jasper, Sardonyx, Smoky Quartz and Tiger’s Eye.

A powerfully energizing crystal. The protection and good fortune amulet stone. Inspires success in business, brings abundance. Grounds and anchors you in your present surroundings. Protects against rage and resentment. Increases fertility and creativity. Continually charges up your energy.

Keep one in your car to protect against road rage. Place one inside your front door to draw in abundance.

Crystal shamanism

The use of crystals goes back a long way. Eight and a half thousand years ago a young shaman was laid to rest on a bed of red Haematite at Bad Dürrenberg, her magical grave goods beside her. They included numerous bones, 31 tiny Flint blades in a crane’s bone box and a carefully fashioned stone ball that could be rolled rather like dice.

Five thousand years ago in Mesopotamia, a woman was interred with 12 pebbles beside her, her only grave goods. They were collected from 200 miles away. It is tempting to think, along with the professor who uncovered the grave, that they had a specific purpose: divination. Early Mesopotamian sources describe an elmeshu (probably clear Quartz) that functioned as an oracle stone.

In the Old Testament the breastplate of the high priest was not only studded with flashing crystals, it also carried the Urim and Thummin, oracular items that ascertained the will of God and the future of the Jewish nation. These are believed to have been meteorites, which were highly sacred throughout the ancient world (see Chapter 18).

Crystal healing

Crystals were also part of early medical practice and this continued into more modern times. Crystals listed in the medical papyri of ancient Egypt formed an important part of treatment right up to the eighteenth century. The tradition passed into the magical and medical lexicons of East and West, and crystals are the basis for many modern pharmaceuticals. Minerals such as lithium, found in Kunzite and other depression-alleviating crystals, are still used in conventional medicine today.

Modern usage

Quite simply, the modern world couldn’t function without crystals. They are found throughout industry, generating and storing energy. Rare-earth minerals are highly prized in the innovative-technology field. Diamond bits are effective cutting tools. Kyanite is found in spark plugs. Medical lasers are focused through Rubies. Quartz powers ultrasound. Computers run on silicon chips — thin slivers of Quartz. Russian naval boats are being coated with anti-radar paint created from reflective fullerene-based Shungite, a mineral used in crystal healing for protection and wellbeing. Many modern crystals are manufactured, but have their base in the natural crystal world.

Shungite contains virtually all the minerals in the periodic table. A rare carbon mineral, it is composed of fullerenes — ’Buckyballs’ (spherical) or ’Buckytubes’ (cylindrical). It is found only in Karelia, northern Russia, and is at least 2 billion years old. It was laid down before organic life was established, and yet carbon-based minerals normally arise from decayed organic matter, so it has been suggested that an enormous meteorite hit the Earth and created the crater in which Lake Onega and the Shungite formed. Although the lake is highly polluted, the water flowing from it is purified by the Shungite and has been used for healing for hundreds of years.

Research has shown that Shungite is antiviral and antibacterial. It absorbs whatever is hazardous to health, whether that be pesticides, free radicals, bacteria and the like, or EMF, microwave and other vibrational emissions. It transforms water into a biologically active life-enhancing substance, whilst at the same time removing harmful micro-organisms and pollutants (see Scalar wave research). It boosts physical wellbeing and has a powerful effect on the immune system. Restoring emotional equilibrium, it transmutes stress into a potent energetic recharge. Wear Shungite or place it on the source of EMF emissions such as computers and cell phones to eliminate their detrimental effect on sensitive human energy systems.

Petaltone EMF Protection essence works particularly well when placed on Shungite.

Note: As Shungite is a rapid absorber of negative energy and pollutants, it needs to be cleansed frequently.
