LEGENDARY POWER
Sacred to the ancient Druids and Celts, Smoky Quartz symbolized the potent dark power of Earth gods and goddesses. A large Smoky Quartz forms part of the Scepter of Power of the Scottish royal regalia. The stone was an essential ingredient in a magician’s tool kit. Dr. Dee, Queen Elizabeth I’s seer, had a Smoky Quartz scrying ball for connecting to the lower worlds, controlling the spirits there, and adjusting the course of history. Smoky Quartz shields against psychic attack and transmutes negative energies. Today it is invaluable for absorbing electromagnetic smog, including Wi-Fi emanations and geopathic stress.
Morion is the ancient Scottish name for dark Smoky Quartz, and Pliny speaks of mormorion, a transparent deep black crystal. Morions are rare, naturally irradiated, intense black Smoky Quartzes, usually with dolomite or other minerals attached that synergistically enhance its shielding and detoxifying properties. Morions gently heal emotional conditions and overcome lack of trust. Other black Quartzes may have been artificially irradiated and can be radioactive. The “like heals like” principle, however, suggests the energetic resonance of naturally irradiated ones can, if used with care, neutralize toxicity from radiation sources or treatments.
Cairngorm, another Scottish-named stone, is a yellowish Citrine-like Smoky Quartz that brings light into the heart of darkness. My own power ring is a Cairngorm, inherited from my mentor Christine Hartley, a colleague of Dion Fortune, who was active in restoring magical awareness to Britain. I value it highly for its power to help me safely traverse dark places to seek the light and for its ability to synthesize alpha, beta, and theta brainwaves during meditation and journeying.
