PREFACE

Much of the metaphysical jewelry: Though crystal and stone have specific meanings geologically, for the purposes of this book the terms have been used interchangeably.

CHAPTER 3: THE IMPORTANCE OF THE QUARTZ FAMILY

Any mineral that contains any amount: “The Silica Family Tree,” created by John Encarnacion [@a_geologist]. The more common, familiar varieties of minerals, mineraloids, and rocks made up mostly of silica. Chalcedony is fibrous quartz. Chert is microscopically granular (like sugar) quartz. Agate has curved layers of chalcedony; onyx has flat layers. Jasper is red chert (colored by iron oxides); flint is dark—usually black—chert. Coesite and stishovite are high-pressure varieties of silica. Cristobalite and tridymite are high-temperature, low-pressure varieties. Quartz is stable under “moderate” temperatures and pressures and at the Earth’s surface. Instagram photograph, February 27, 2015, retrieved from https://www.instagram.com/p/zoZqRMLHmP/.

Quartzes like these can become colored: “Quartz,” Mindat.org, n.d., accessed December 28, 2017, https://www.mindat.org/min-3337.html.

If you can see the crystals: Also included in the micro-, cryptocrystalline quartz family are carnelian, plasma, sard, and heliotrope. See the website The Quartz Page at http://www.quartzpage.de/.

Sand, a nonrenewable resource: UNEP Global Environmental Alert Service (GEAS), “Sand, Rarer Than One Thinks,” March 2014. Accessed December 28, 2017, from https://na.unep.net/geas/archive/pdfs/GEAS_Mar2014_Sand_Mining.pdf.

In 2016, researchers at the University: “Eternal 5D Data Storage Could Record the History of Humankind,” University of Southampton, News, February 18, 2016, https://www.southampton.ac.uk/news/2016/02/5d-data-storage-update.page.

There, he would go on to research: IBM, “Magnetic Stripe Technology,” n.d., accessed December 28, 2017, https://www.ibm.com/ibm/history/ibm100/us/en/icons/magnetic/team/

While conducting experiments: Marcel Vogel, untitled manuscript, n.d., accessed December 28, 2017, http://marcelvogel.org/MarcelVogel.pdf.

Vogel would go on to declare: This quote from Dr. Marcel Vogel specifically references quartz cut to a precise design known as the “Vogel cut.” In my experience, Vogel-cut crystals are extremely powerful, but unadulterated, natural quartz also works in the same way, just with less “laser-like” strength. CHAPTER 4: THE ESSENTIAL THREE

Even though our Stone Age: There is a possibility that these prehistoric Neanderthals from the Maastricht-Belvédère site in the Netherlands happened upon hematite near to them, but the largest known hematite deposit is roughly twenty-five miles away in Eifel. In these areas in Eifel with hematite deposits are Neanderthal sites that have stones from the Maastricht-Belvédère, lending some evidence to the connection of these two sites. W. Roebroeks, M. J. Sier, T. Kellberg Nielsen, D. De Loecker, J. M. Pares, C. E. S. Arps, and H. J. Mucher, “Use of Red Ochre by Early Neandertals,” Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 109, no. 6 (2012): 1889—94.

They then took great effort: Ocher comes in a range of colors from yellow to sienna to burnt red depending on how the pigment was processed, but all ocher is derived from hematite.

In addition to painting: Michel Pastoureau and Jody Gladding, Red: The History of a Color (Princeton, NJ, Princeton University Press, 2017).

This is why the ancient Greeks: A student of both Plato and Aristotle, the Greek logician, botanist, ethicist, and all-around scholar Theophrastus gave hematite its original name, aematitis lithos, which means “blood stone,” sometime between 325 and 300 BCE. Later an ancient Roman, Pliny the Elder, translated aematitis lithos to the Latin haematites, which means “bloodlike.” “Hematite,” Mindat.org, n.d., accessed August 31, 2017, www.mindat.org/min-1856.html.

While the female sex: Chris Knight, Blood Relations: Menstruation and the Origins of Culture (New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1995).

Scientists have discovered: The hypothesis that the inner core of the Earth was a solid ball of iron was made by Danish seismologist Inge Lehmann in 1940. It was later confirmed, in 1971, that the inner core is an iron-nickel alloy. (By the newest evidence, the composition of the inner core is actually 85 percent iron, 10 percent nickel, and 5 percent silicon.) Considering that women are the holders of many of the blood mysteries, I find it quite interesting this scientific theory originally came from a woman.

This means Mother Earth’s: Most iron on the crust of the Earth is bonded with other minerals. Iron ores like hematite need processing in order to make pure iron. Free metallic iron is virtually unknown on Earth’s surface.

Grounding takes the overabundance: In addition to the major chakras aligned with your spine, you have minor chakras, like those that are in your feet. The root chakra and the chakras in the feet have an important relationship with each other, as the foot chakras help transport the energy traveling down from your crown chakra down through to your root chakra. Then from the root chakra your foot chakras become the conduit to move the energy down into Mother Earth. It is a way of bringing down ethereal energies through your body and grounding them in the physical world.

But this is actually a dishonor: “Fluorite,” Mindat.org, n.d., accessed May 30, 2017, https://www.mindat.org/min-1576.html. Fluorite also takes the shape of dodecahedrons, hexoctahedrons, and tetrahexahedrons.

CHAPTER 8: HOW TO TAP INTO YOUR INTUITION

Like the famous filmmaking: This is a variant of a quote from Alfred Hitchcock, who said, “Drama is life with the dull bits cut out.”

CHAPTER 10: CLEANSING AND CHARGING YOUR CRYSTALS

But crystal building: Alan Holden and Phylis Morrison, Crystals and Crystal Growing (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1999).

They, and the herbalists: If you wish to learn more about the properties of sacred smudge plants and how to harvest them, seek an herbalist teacher or school that practices ethical wildcrafting. They will teach you about the plants and the criteria to follow in order to harvest plants ethically and sustainably.

And all the water: US Geological Survey, “The World’s Water,” n.d., accessed May 30, 2019, https://water.usgs.gov/edu/earthwherewater.html.

In the world of metaphysical: Selenite has different definitions in the geological versus metaphysical worlds. Gypsum is a mineral that comes in many forms from clear to fibrous, and from colorless to tinted in color, and historically geologists used to call only the clear and transparent form of gypsum selenite. But geologists no longer use this name, favoring the name gypsum for all forms of this mineral.

It may need to be buried: Something to consider if you’re not actively using your crystals is to put them in a dark place for a while, since hiding out for a bit so they can enjoy their own energies is a nice energetic vacation for them, as it reminds them of when they were in Mother Earth.

CHAPTER 12: WAYS TO WORK WITH CRYSTALS

This is why it is extremely: On many crystal healing websites, black tourmaline is listed as toxic because of its aluminum content, but the International Gemstone Society says, “As long as you’re not eating rock dust, toxicity from these stones is unlikely.” Addison Rice, “Gemstone Toxicity Table,” International Gem Society, n.d., accessed May 30, 2019, gemsociety.org/article/gemstone-toxicity-table/.

Medical geology is an extremely niche: Mindat.org., n.d.. Retrieved from https://www.mindat.org/.
